They're monomorphic. No physical between the sexes. They're also pretty difficult to spawn but a few have achieved a spawn or two.
Some folks just get lucky: http://www.tolibra.com/fish/canarensis.htm
They're completely freshwater BTW.
Aye, don't really know where to put this...haha. Oddball has a large group of them, his are pushing about 2.5" right now and growing fast. Very kewl cichlids, get them if you have a chance to do so. Don't get very large either, i think 5" being max.
I know they Indian, was already in this section when I was thinking of it so thats why its in here and not the all around section. Although I guess an Indian section would be nice.
They about 2" ea, too bad the tank wasnt ready earlier, they had a nice group of 5 or 6 that schooled together and looked great.
As you might already be aware E. canarensis are considered one among the most difficult Cichlids to obtain, leave alone get them to breed.
A few of my aquarist friend ventured into the Kanara region (that's where the term Canarensis came from) of South India and managed to catch these beauties. And you know what ? Very recently, thats after about 3 years since these fish were wild caught, one of them had his E. canarensis spawn too !!!
We are all eagerly waiting for the outcome
Nice!!! Oddballs might have come from your friend...haha. His are starting to get frisky, so hopefully he will be able to get them to breed.... And yes, they are a pain to obtain and totally awesome cichlids. So awesome to see them swim in a 'school'..
