Hello
Couple days ago removed 4 fire mouths from my pond .I had 8 all together in the pond .Placed 4 in a 40 gallon tank in the hopes that I could find a pair.

I wanted to give a friend a sexed pair for his 125 gallon. I know I have females as have had lots fry in last 6 months.

These 4 fire mouths exhibit red throats and fight each other. Should I assume I removed 4 males? They are all roughly same size.

Thank you

no give them some more time like at least a month or two, for the pairs to form. right now they are fighting over establishing territory. im sure a pair will form, but as for sexing them there was a great thread in the breeding section about sexing and breeding FMs. do a little searching. gl

Thank you both very much for the info.I imagine broke up a pair or two when I removed them from the pond never thought of that.
The tank has 4 flowepots that they can use as caves so will just give it month or two see if pair forms.
Will search for sexing info

thanks

i have 2 firemouths and i am curious about sexing too but when i went searching everywhere said they are notoriously hard to sex and the usual male markers are not a good rule to follow in FM's, ie trailers, colour, size etc.

Yes they are hard .
I have 8 in the pond and all looked the same to me thus removed 4 in hopes that in the tank could sex them and get a pair but no luck.
I know I have both sexes due to fry but by looking at them impossible for me who is new to cichlids to sex.

I will wait now to see if one pairs up.

Yeah just give them a little time and they will pair off again when they were in the pond you did not notice them paired.

In the pond I had no idea who was paired and who wasnt its hard to tell there with clay pots and driftwood which they hide in. Now and than I would change 1/2 or 3/4 the water and since lots floating plants imagine as shelter netted fry.

I took those 4 at random but think on the way to getting a pair now as 2 seem to be together driving away the other 2 when I think its a pair will return the other 2 to the pond and give them to my friend for his 125.

Its nice how you notice the colors ,etc in a tank as pond you don't get to see any of that though they do like it outside
