Hi all. So there’s been a lot of confusion around my flowerhorns gender. When I originally got him/her I vented it and it seemed like a female due to the round vents(I didn’t solely focus on the hump). I’m not experienced with large fish though so I asked a local forum and everyone said male due to the hump, no one mentioned anything about the vent. I accepted that it’s a male and life went on.
Now around a year down the line we have eggs!My boyfriend and I decided to search for a male and now an argument has started on my local sales group and I need possible experts that could help out.
The other person is still convinced it’s a male due to its hump, he refuses to take into account anything else. I believe it’s a female because theres eggs(only other fish is a bichir), it’s vent was swollen both times eggs were found, it got thinner both times eggs were found, before eggs were discovered it was cleaning the rocks and area the eggs were found and it’s extremely protective over the eggs even with the bichir(we can’t even do water changes or cleaning without being attacked where it’s normally very docile with us).
I would really appreciate any help from someone who won’t just base its gender on the size of the hump. I’ve attached the vent picture from when we first got it as well as a recent picture of it and one where the eggs are visible.
