So how do you tell which are male and which are female? I am having a hard time figuring this out. One has slightly longer 'streamers' on its fins then the other. Any general advice appreciated.

Well, for my Geo. Surinamensis when the get to a mature size, the males have noticibly longer trailers on their fins. They will also start growing a small nuchal hump.

Bump for this I think I have a female and 2 males because of their behavior they are only 3" so no trailors yet whats a good way to sex?

Actual true surinamensis or the ones they sell at the pet shop??

I think that the fins can give an indication, but the best way is to watch them when they pair up or vent them if you really want to be sure.

Ones they sell at the petshop. Havnt gotten a proper ID on them yet. Been told Abalios, but I do not think so. Venting is probably the only way at this point where there sexual dimorphism hasnt become apparent yet.

I'm not sure if trails would give a good indication - both males and females can develop long trailers. They are fairly easy to vent though, and as mentioned above, males tend to have a humpy head shape.

yeah i think venting will be your best bet, i have a young group of surinamensis growing out right now and i think i might have 2 males and 2 females just going by their trailers they are starting to grow and body color and the fact that the two i think are females always hang with the largest one that i think is the dominant male, and the 4th one will feed with them and school when they swim up to beg for food but other than that he kind of hangs out separate from the group, but i am waiting for them to get a little larger before attempting to vent them since the largest one is only like 4in

I agree with sarah behavior tells alot. mine are still young but out of the 3 two hang together majority of the time and the other searches for food on his own I think I have 2 males 1 female

Well mine tend to lock jaws sometimes. One chases the other around. I only have two so the behavior may be different.
