I purchased a couple of German Gold rams about a month back and have been trying to figure out their sexes. I have searched the forums and read the sticky on dwarf cichlids but I still am having trouble determining the sex of these two. I know one of them is a male for sure, as he has a raised first and second dorsal rays and is brightly colored (see picture). the other was less brilliantly colored intially but last night the two "faced off" and both displayed the same coloration (it was fun to watch). What was confusing was the ram i assumed to be female did have a pinkish tint in the belly area. Is it possible for a female to raised dorsal spines and exhibit fighting behavior? I am rather new to the hobby and the only fish I have ever had spawn were convicts and i wasn't even aware of the spawn until I saw the fry (go figure). Any advice would be appreciated and well recieved. thanks

:jaw:never seen any rams like that but I don't see a lot of them so yea. As for your sexing question, I think you can sex them by the seeing if the pelvic fin extend past anus=male and if not female, but wait till some1 agree or disagree with me

I take back what I said:screwy:. If you are refering to the fish in the photo its a male because of the first couple of rays of the dorsal fin are longer

Thanks terror, I was aware that the one in the photo is a male, my question is about his tankmate who happens to be very camera shy, I will try to get a good pic. The more i read the more i think the other fish is a male as well, just less colorful. Any more info?

Here are some better pictures, i am leaning toward male, fyi I have only had them for a month and i am not sure if they are mature yet....

In the picture of both of them, the one in the foreground is the fish in question.
