Sexing hoplarchus psittacus

IMO you don't sex them until they spawn. I have seen pairs where both fish look almost identical. Sometimes the females will be a bit smaller but at this size it's hard to say because growth rates vary as sub-adults.
 
I agree with what Ryan has said. There are no discernible differences in markings, coloration or finnage that I've been able to observe. The only difference I can see is size difference once they reach a larger size. My males are ~12", the females 9-10" for fish the same age.
