Sexing immature Orange pikes.

I read somewhere that that is the size they start pairing up so if that is what you want then just look for a pair.

Uhhh...no. LoL....they've got quite a loooong ways to go before they will start truely pairin up. They are Lugubris pikes, so they will 'school/swim' together 'peacefully' till they are starting to get into subadult. Don't percieve this as being pairin, cuz it most certainly is not. Best bet for pairin would be to get a group of 3 or more (more greatly inhancing your chances of gettin a pair) and letting them pair up on their own as they get larger. Can't really sex them till they are about 7 to 9"....even then it can be tricky. Best bet is to wait till they are full grown, cuz then it is easy to sex them. If you had gotten them when they were 3" or so, and had grown them up together, you could watch for which ones grew the fastest, as these would most likely be males. But right now your best bet is to just get a group, grow them out, and hope you get a pair.

No, you increase you chances for aggression. Either get a group of three or more, or just get one.
That is what the lfs told me also. So I bought three at once. Then one of them bullyed the other two so much they couldn't move from the top corners of the tank, so they had to be separated... I would say get like six or more to be safe.

Aye, more the better, xingu I are one of the more aggressive pikes fo shore. All my pikes are in groups of three, except for my lent...which is solo....but I keep my pikes together....so it helps to break down the aggression. Most of my pikes aren't that aggressive though, at least not as much as xingu I...orange pikes...;)
