The second JD is indeed a female.

I really need a better picture of the first one, but I think it's a male with a lot of blue on the gill plates.

Don't know how to sex firemouths..sorry.

How can you tell with the 1st one? I saw the blue on the gill plate and thought it could be female, but it has a slight bump on its head already. I might have to wait until it grows more, but I'll try to take a better picture tonight if it will stay still.

my JD has the same blue, also the top fin will help you identify the JD better.Since my JD is a male,it has the sharp point at the top fin at the back. Also, since he is bigger,he is showing more blue on his body and his top fin.

Those last 4 pics are the same one. I think its a female. I only know how to judge older JDs by the spangles on the gillplate. The top fin is more rounded, but I'm not sure how accurate that is because he/she is only 1.5-2'' long.

Those 4 new pictures.. is that the same fish as the first picture in your original post?

I still think it's a male, because some males do have a lot of blue on their gill plates.
But females have blue "splodges".

It is the same one. The other JD has so many spangles and blue on its lower gill plate that I think its safe to assume it is a female.
