this is a 155g half planted tank. there are 6 GTs, 4 JDs, a pleco, and no turtle doves. tomorrow i will be changing from a wet dry to an underground filter. so as long as i have the fish out, i am thinning the herd (as i have found it impossible to catch anything in this tank except the plants). i would like to keep the dominate male and largest female in this tank and remove the other 2 JDs. i will also be aiming to take out a couple GTs tomorrow and add 2 oscars for a total of 6 cichlids and the pleco.

the JDs:

everything is narrated but if you find my voice annoying...i think i have 3 male JD and one female. the female is the only one with a green blue beard. the dominate male i think is the very dark JD with bright colors. the other 2 JDs without beards were darker (like what i assume is the male JD) up until a couple days ago when it seems they have become stressed.

the things throwing me off with the JDs are that what i assume to be the female is both #2 in command over what i assume to be 2 males and that she is the largest JD.

the GTs:

i have 3 brightly colored GTs and 3 dark almost blackish hued GTs. i assume the brighter ones are the males and the dimmer ones are the females. 2 of the bright ones are the largest. then one of the dim ones is the 3rd largest and she (assumption) is often chasing the 2 largest males as if she is most dominant. the 3 smaller GTs one bright and 2 dim are submissive and seem to chase nobody.

what is throwing me off about the GTs is the 3rd largest GT looks like a female and is chasing the 2 largest bright males looking GTs.

TY in advance.

The JDs:

3 females, 1 male

The females are the lighter colored ones, they have very much blue coloration on their gill plates. The darker one is a male. The fact that the male is darker colored and the females are lighter is not the grounds I am using to ID the sex. the lighter one that has the least blue on the gill plate may be a male, but I doubt it

The GTs, I do not know

i was told that my jack was a male, because of his anal fine it came to a point and the female was rounded.

in the order with the video the first one is male, the second is female ,and the third and fourth also look female.if it was me i would keep the first two and maybe someone else can verify the sex of the last two but they look female to me,

How to sex a JD:

picture.php

Green Box : Males do not have intense concentrations of blue on the gill plate

Pink Box : Males have longer anal fins and typically dorsal fins

Blue box : Verticle barring is not indicitve of a particular sex, both males and females will exhibit this during stress/breeding/agression

if i heard that one was male and one was female those are the 2 i was planning on keeping so this is great.

reedit: just heard my light timers go off, i have a morning date with some fish.

yeah i think its 3 female Jds with the one male and not sure on the GTs as they were swimming pretty fast but def at least one male and one female, but i will say when you are catching them their colors are going to change dramatically from stress and it gets really easy to mix them up when they are all chasing around the tank and stressed colors so i would go with venting to make sure you have what you want, when you catch the fish flip it over and look at its private area and for females the holes will be different like this Oo and for males they will both be small oo. also i would only suggest adding 1 oscar and not 2, these guys get much larger than JDs and GTs and are far messier as well so i would just go with one or you will have to constantly be doing water changes
