Hello everyone,

I purchased a festae that is approximately 3.5 inches to add to my 125 gallon tank.

The festae is shows signs of being female because of the black coloration of it's dorsal and anal fin; however, there are spangles on the caudal fin, dorsal fin, and minimal spangles on the anal fin and on it's body which I am under the impression that spangles are more of a male trait.

Can someone please clarify the gender of my festae? Thank you.

On a side note... my little festae, 1.5 inches, in a smaller tank is doing fantastic :) thank you for those who gave advice.

Not sure but I was told males can also have the black but females will never have the spangle

The festae in pic looks female to me. And yes males can appear to have a darkened dorsal too but I've never seen a male with a permanent blotch in dorsal like females will. Females do have spangles which usually fade as they get older. But I know of two females that I bred, which both have just as many spangles as a male!!

I had read that some females can have spangling but I thought this festae would have too many to be a female.
Thank you very much for clarifying this for me.

Hard to tell for me as my male looked similar to that one at that size. But the dorsals forsure weren't that dark. Going to go with female but im not certain.
