Sexing polys...lesson learned

Figured i would post this for new members.

This congicus started out with Hao and found her...i mean his way to me a while back at 10-11 inches and was thought to be female. I couldnt find any pics showing the anal fin but pay attention at the 35 second mark.... looks female.

Time goes on fish puts on more size and matures a little more. Whamo its a male.


Moral of the story dont get you're heart set on the sex while they are small.

Told my son about the pbb's dirty little secret...its a girl so he and my daughter decided to switch names. Pbb is now princess tiana and congi is kong lmaooo...it kind of fits though as kong/congi is always in beast mode

Jaws I can relate. My Big Weeksi- for the first two years I swore it was a she with a long slender anal fin. Then one day my daughter yells at me asking what is wrong with the weeksii. I go over and lo and behold the long slender anal fin was now flared out broad, muscular and cupped so much he could have carried a good size marble around

I was going to start yet a new thread with a snappy new title (you know me) but figured might as well use one of the ones we have laying about doing little to nothing anyway on roughly the same subject.....wheew! (And drop my chances of being banned or suspended lol)
So we have fin thickness, muscle mass, fin cupping which I'd guess as a firm yes on male or female, or is it?
We know little really right? Does it really matter? If you are going to try breeding ot does. Some people just need/want to know for various purposes. Long story short let's keep this discussion going for those who need to know and those that are just curious.
Latest "trend" bulge at anal fin. What constitutes a bulge? I have all ujs all anal fins are pretty thin compared to pics of ljs and all anal fins are roughly the same size and shape amongst my fish. Based on fish overall size of coarse. But a few have a distinct bulge where other do not. Pics may not be highest quality, but I see distinct bulges on 1 del and the albino.

So that got a little congested. The multiple same pic of moke bumm is the same pic. I see no bulge at all on the moke. That last sentence got deleted.

I would think the del and sen are male but not only based off the bulge but it looks as if they're anal fin is meatier...who knows. Vancouver_98683 is a sexing beast haha

Im not sure the bulge at the anal fin is the primary indicator but moee than likely a contributing factor. But again who knows.

Female pics : notice sp.delaware has a slight bulge but is female

Still clear as mud! Lol.
The pics of del are two different ones the full body is the bigger one "hes" 9"ish the tail shot is the smaller one. Bulge is there on smaller but it's way smaller in comparison to the bigger fish. Is it a fish overall size thing or is one female or just not as well equipped. ....?
