Does anyone know if females keep their dorsal spot? I've seen some pics of larger fish and it looks like females keep it and males somewhat lose it or it is faded.

yes females keep their dorsal spots. The spot will just fade depending on mood or water parameters. Only way to get a accurate sex is to allow the fish to grow up a bit and you will notice at around 5" or so that females will have a more 'narrow' body shape and head shape not as robust as males. also dorsal and anal fins will not be as long as males. Its tough better off getting a group and wait for them to pair off
