I picked up a couple rope fish this afternoon and was wondering how to identify their sex. They are about 8" and 10" long. I have read two different methods, one involves counting caudel spines, and the other is by the anal fin. Which is it? If it's similar to a bichir, I have one that has a larger and more defined anal fin, and the other is small and kinda blends into the caudel fin. I'll try to get some pics up this week, they are in the small quarantine tank waiting to be treated for parasites as a precaution at the moment.

The anal fin of the maler is approx twice as wide as the female just like the rest of the Polypterid family-Anne
I agree with Anne. I've also noticed that the females are much more orange. The males being a pale olive color. (this only being in adults)
I went last week to try to get a girly for my guy but no luck. I'll be back this Thurs. looking again.
