I've never asked this question before but have tried to make heads or tails of what has been asked and answered before; I have 4 Salvini one @ 6-7" lotsa blue little red and a greyish yellow coloring - 3x 2" Sal's lotsa red's extremely yellow very little blues but some with beaks - Here's what I think I understood:

Females - Red bellies, black spot on the gill plate, no beak ?

Males - lotsa blues, blue spot on gill plate, beaked mouth ?

Correct or incorrect and the correct way to ID sex without venting

Hi... From my experience with them... The females usually have the black spot about midway on their dorsal fin.. they also seem to often have a lot more red or orange coloring on their bellies when young adults/adults.. If you post pics it might help... Good luck with your fish... Sue:D

The black spots (dorsal, cheek) are the best way, but aren't always 100% there (for cheek) or both have the dorsal spot.
