i have 4 silver dollars and 3 of them just have the red hook part. and one has blackish grayish dots and the red hook? is this just somthing that eventually will go away or is this like a way to sex them?
If their red hook metynnis the males have a wavey hook and females a smooth hook. I've got 10 standard silver dollars, 4x red hooks, 4x spotted and a yellow hook. There breeding all the time. In fact one of the spotteds trying to get a female to spawn right now.
really I had never heard of sucessful breeding in a captive enviroment... plus redhook males get oorange splotches on their sides unless I have read bad info
my lone male definatly has a wider anal fin that the other four females. that and he's the only one i see trying to spawn off and on (i will get those buggers to get it right eventually).
great fish and i'm thinking about offering more soon, but they'll be smaller and i'll have to raise them out a bit more.
the only down side i have with them is the spastic behavior at times.

How do they breed are they egg scatterers or are they nest builders or what??? I am really interested to know since their is no study on their breeding habits by anyone at all. And hte fins are by no way a means to sex by males have orange blotches on them whne sexually mature
