i've seen a nice texas cichlid it's about 4" and it has a black blotch on the dorsal fin which i know normally means it's female ,but the fish has some nice long trailers on the fins and looks male to me, is it possible for a male to have the black blotch on the dorsal ?

Have any pics? The blotch is usually female. My female had long trailers too. She laid eggs so that confirmed female.

After keeping a number of cichlids for a while I found that trailers means nothing when it comes to sexing. I had plenty of females with long trailers and males with short trailers.
With most Herichthys, I find profile is a better (not foolproof)method of determination.
