OK so a while back I made a trip down to a "local" river with a biscut and a net. I caught a bunch of TX fry amongst others but I picked out 6 figureing I must get at least one male from a half dozen. I know at 1/2 inch they are to small/young to sex but I figure I would ask how dose one go about sexing TX cichlids? There are a few who dont have very much spotting and are noticeably not as tall nor do they have as distinct spotting as their taller/thicker buddies. Anyhow here are a couple of pics to show you what I mean. 1st pic is one of the fish that is not as spotted and thinner/longer and the bottom one is taller/thicker.

Females will tend to have a black blotch in the dorsal fin when sexually mature. Males will not.

Thanks man!

yeah males will be higher bodied and females usually have a black spot in their dorsal though thats not 100%

I rarely have ever seen this black dot on female tx or carpintis. The main earliest signs can be seen at about an inch or 2. males will have a longer head while the females will be a little wider and more blunt. Also the fins are usually either pointed or blunt. If you see 1 with a really defined pointy dorsal fin, it will more than likely turn out male. Sexing young tx isnt really easy until they get bigger, like 3or4+ inches.

They look like small H. cyanoguttatus to me. 2nd pic looks like a probable male. Have a look at the female in my video as reference.
