An island somewhere......
First off.... I wish I would have taken pictures to post to get some visual input but I didn't so we'll have to go with the information at hand. Is there ANY way or signs to visually sex an Umbee just shy of spawning or flipping the fish over to sex. Any indications of patterns that could be helpful in "guestimating" what the sex is. Need some info quick.... I have an opportunity to pick up a couple good size Umbees and would like to get a pair. Thanks in advance.

It's all a guess. I've seen females that look male and males that look female.

Doooh! Does that mean I should buy all three and see if any "tubes" drop?

Could MFK'ers with Umbees post there's so we can see if there are any thing that stands out that could determine sex?

I can see a definite difference in the vents on mine ;) But like Cichla... I am not going to tell you what the are :D But i would guess From the vents that I have 2 of one and 1 of the other....

how big are they? Most umbee keepers dont know what they have until they reach 5-6". most are females.

These are pretty good size..... smallest is 7", next two are 8"-9"...... the two smaller ones have decent amounts of blue w/ turquoise speckling on the gill plates. The largest one isn't as vibrant but I think it's mainly bc it's in a tank with very light background and substrait.

females usually keep the long black line goin downthere body for longer...well, that's what ive noticed...
