I have read that you can determine the sex of bichir from the anal fin. Can someone tell me more information so I know what it is im looking for on my senegals. Is there a certain size/age they must be to be able to tell this? Visual aids always welcomed B).

Yes, you can tell the sex from the anal fin. The male has a thicker, wider anal fin plus a meaty root of the anal fin (than the female has). During mating season, the anal fin of a male periodically forms coffee cup like shape. You can post a close up pic of the anal fin here, so we can help.
 
Seems I need to buy new batteries for the camera before I can do so I will post some pics asap. I have noticed the thinkness part you mentioned before when trying to figure it out.
 
What's the size bichir you have? Juv bichir is indeed harder to tell the sex.
 
males are easy to tell once they are mature enough. the anal fin is very noticable thicker. however, the female anal fin will be thinner. so you will have to guess whether or not it is a female or just an unmature male.

you can always post pics of your bichir in question and let the experts take a shot at it :)
make sure to focus on the anal fin.

So does their gender affect their adult size??

I found out I have two boys *senegals* and one girl *ornate* :) Thanks for the info guys
