Sexually mature female jd?

How big typically will a female jack Dempsey be when she first reaches sexual maturity? And ideally, how bug should she be conpared to the male? My male is exactly 6.5 inches long (finally pulled him out and measured). I've wanted to breed them forever now and each time he beats the crap out of the female and she gets an infection and I have to quarantine. I've tried 2 different females now and to no avail.

What if you tried putting an egg crate divider in the tank with the male on one side and female on the other so they get used to seeing eachother. Then after some time, cut out a hole in the egg crate that only the female can fit through so she can pass through freely but has a refuge should the male start abusing her.

I've thought about doing that, however the female I have available is almost the same size as my male. That's why I was wondering how big they are before they're able to reproduce. I want a smaller female but I don't know how small.
