I'm currently keeping my specific gravity at 1.009, but I'm thinking about bringing it down some so I can try some live plants in the tank. What would a good SG be?

Stock:
1 dragon goby
1 bumblebee goby
4 orange chromides
2 monos (1 sebae 1 argentus)
3 F8 puffers

I think 1.003 is about the max... Then your stock (especially the Monos) will eventually need a higher SG. I've found it to be kind of a catch-22 and haven't tried it. Good luck to ya..

Above post is correct - most plants aren't very salt tolerant. 1.003 is about the max, although you might notice some more delicate species pegging at that level too. Java fern can take up to 1.005 (or even maybe a little higher), though.

Bear in mind, you don't have a good mix in there, SG wise. The orange chromides and figure 8 puffer are low-end brackish species, preferring an SG below 1.010, while the rest will need a much higher SG when they grow up.

I added live plants to my 55 gallon brackish tank roughly three months ago. The SG is 1.008 & houses 1 dragon goby, 3 black mollies, 15 ghost shrimp & 3 snails of unknown origin. The swords, valls, & banana plants are doing well & continue to grow & thrive. All other plants I've tried, not so much.

To curb the cost of the plants, I've taken to growing new varieties in my other tanks & harvesting the offspring for the brackish tank.

Best of luck.
