I just realized theres a lot of shale laying at the edge of the woods behind my house... Would I be able to put it in my freshwater tank? It looks pretty stackable...

Might have to watch out for any sharp edges but sounds good, I was planning on using up some bits of paver I have left from a gardening project in my next tank. I would boil it first to make sure there's nothing on it that could be bad for the fish.

^agreed. After you clean it, boil it and look for sharp edges, you should put a small test piece is a small bowl of water and check for leaching. Shale has several layers and there could be some dirt trapped between layers.

But, sounds good! I am jealous :)

BTW, all hardscape in my 150 came out of my yard (rocks and "drift" wood). Its pretty cool knowing its "home grown" :)

Thanks for the input guys, ill boil some and im sure the plecs will love the cave i make for them. :D
