It's been a long time since I had my senegal, but because my axolotl has similar spacing needs as a polypterus I thought I'd ask here. Has anyone used a really shallow tank(like a coral frag tank) to keep their polypterus? I'm talking like 8" tall tanks that are really wide. Theres a petstore nearby selling their old coral growing tank but its 36x36x8. I'd need to put a lid on the tank, but it would really put my mind at ease to hear about someone keeping their fish in a shallow tank with no problems. Otherwise the dimensions are amazing, and I would love to get a tank with that much walking space for my axolotl.

I think this would be ideal. From my understanding (especially the smaller guys) they need a shallower tank, than tall, since they breathe air from the surface. I think they would much rather this style tank than anything that's much taller.

Don't they live in shallow pools/rivers in the wild?

This is what I'm thinking. I've marked off how high it would be on my tank, and my axolotl swims past it every once in a while, but I don't think he would mind the height cut off too much considering all the extra floor space.

I think a shallow tank would be fine, but id be worried about the lower temp axolotls require.
I'm not keeping my axolotl with a polypterus, they just have the same space requirments (floor space is better than height) so I was wondering if anyone keeping polypterus had kept theirs in a shallow tank with any problems.

height requirement of 8-12"

for juvenile, you might want to fill the tank to half full only.

go for it, just construct a screen hood and only fill it abou 2/3 or half way, in fact i think that would make a really cool ropefish tank as well

I'd set it up as 1/3 land 2/3 water.
