When you first entered into the harem of angelfish/discus keeping, did you expect keeping the fish to be any easier and fun or did you not like the challenges of keeping either or both of these fish that tend to be less forgiving to mistakes than expected? From your mistakes, what have you learned so far since you kept them?

Everyone who have short and long term experiences particularly those new to these fish are free to discuss and share their thoughts.

As a kid I did a lot of angel fish and found them pretty easy. I taught myself a lesson when I bought a small green puffer and he immediately went after my angels eating ones fins completely off! But, it survived and grew its fins back!!

Then I tried discus. I failed miserably for the reasons of stupid experimetation. I.E. discus with oscar, discus with S.A. cichlids etc. After going salt for 10 years I came back to discus with a better understanding of what it takes to concentrate and care for one species alone. So other than the occasional black discus disease I'm pretty happy with my results. Just wish discus were cheaper!

when i started with discus i researched before i bought them so i had no real problems. they have a few specific requirements and if you follow them they actually have been one of the hardiest rewarding fish i have ever had

I have had angels from the time I started. In the beginning I liked them because they were easy to care for and forgiving ( Scalares at least ). Now I like them for their beauty as well as the fact that given the proper care they really seem to flourish more than other common tropical fish.

I have kept discus for a few years and never got them to flourish. This was due to a few factors. I had quite a few tanks at that time ( about 16 or 17 ) and did not give them the care they needed. Another contributing factor was that I did not start with quality fish, this really shows as the fish are growing and aging. Also, I did not feed them the highest quality foods, as should be done if you want the absolute best from your fish.
