OMFG thats frickin sweet wish i could see it. can u get pics? if so plz try

First off, White Spotted Bamboo Sharks do not give birth to live young. They lay eggs, so in order for this Shark to have hatched, the egg would have needed to have been in the tank for more than a few months. If they just randomly found the shark one day without even knowing about the egg I am a bit concerned about the program being run. Also sharks are capable of carrying / storing semen for long periods of time until they feel it is "safe" to have the pup. Pretty cool stuff when you begin to research it. None the less anytime a Shark is born in captivity its a great thing for the hobby just hope they take care of it.

lol, anybody run a dna test on the teacher? Maybe he got lonely

1) EVERY time this is claimed to have happend, there was a male in with the female at some point. It's not uncommon for sharks to hold sperm for seven years.
2) Like Brenden said, white spotted bamboo sharks lay eggs. It takes about 4 months for them to hatch. Someone doesn't look at their tank enough, or someone is playing a prank.

Either way, they just made themselves out to be fools.

"When we found out it hatched, everyone rushed the tank," said Kristen Shriner, a 17-year-old senior, who has overseen the care of the mother shark.

From this quote it seems like everyone knew there was an egg in the tank. I think they were surprised it was fertile and hatched.

I must have miss read that line. Never the less the whole concept of "parthenogensis" I believe it tottally out of the question. And from the article it doesn't look like this High School or Science Department knows very much about keeping Sharks or raising pups which agaisn raises a bit of concern from me.

I missed that part of it as well, but seriously, all you have to do is LOOK at an egg to see it's growing.

And if they didn't think it was fertile, why would you leave a bad egg in the water to trash your water Q? Seems like rookies shocked themselves.
