my friend has a set of shark jaws and he was wondering what species they belong to. he said they were from topsail island, NC. they looked like sand tiger jaws to me but i wanted to see what you guys thought.
First I am no expert on shark jaws. But I do dive with sand tigers almost ever week and I agree the teeth defiantly look like sand tiger. On thing that does not look correct to me is top row in the front look like they are in backwards unless I am looking at it wrong the curv on the teeth looks like they are curving the wrong direction. I would like to see zoos opinion. The bottom rows look correct.
Sandtiger for sure.
But I'd like to see an upclose of the top teeth as well. Some people like to detatch the teeth for something like this, then re-glue them in after the cleaning process. Soome places will stack the jaws with lots of extra large teeth for selling. It looks like the top jaw has a couple of lower jaw teeth imbedded in the top.
When I do jaws, I keep the teeth attached, so all teeth are in the 'normal' position.
Here's a set from a female Atl Blacktip.
Here are some sandtiger teeth. The tips should curve backwards toward the mouth. It helps them hold and tear the food. The curve design means the more the prey struggles, the more of a grip the shark has on the food.
What you see in these pics are the backs of the teeth.
