has anyone ever thought about this? i would love to do a shark tank at some point on my life, and the thought of making a profile thread popped into my head...

even though i dont have sharks i know quite a bit about them, so if anyoone would like to help me out with this, send me a p.m. and we'll be able to get started.

With over 380 species of sharks, it would have to be very general and probably not work out too well. We do have a lot of good shark info in this section if people search by common name or by species name. SRC has some great profile threads going.

One thread going here is about sharks NOT suited for home aquaria.

this is a noob question, but... whats SRC?

and i figured that we could have a profile thread for the sharks that are regularly imported/easy to get that are suitable for aquariums. would this be possible?

Src stands for sharkraycentral.com where most of what you are talking about already exists. An awesome reference for shark keepers and enthusiasts.

Possibly, I highly suggest signing up and reading over there.
We have a few experinced shark keepers on MFK, but SRC is very specific about keeping sharks and rays. There are a few more people in the know over there - including a lot of the best importers/collectors of aquaria sized animals.

im not gonna be able to do a shark setup for a few years to come... are you suggesting that i sign up there to help out, give advice, and maybe learn a bit so when i am ready for a shark tank ill be in the know already?

Just sign up to learn. It's free, like here. It's another board like MFK, but exclusively for sharks and rays - there are EXCELLENT species profiles there as well.

Sign up, read and learn. The species profiles there are pretty top notch.
And feel free to ask shark questions here as well. I'll be bold enough to say MFK is home of some pretty qualified shark experts who have kept most species that are suited for home aquaria. I'm sure the members here will be able to help you learn a lot as well.

The problem - about asking what sharks are suitable for Home aquaria - is that it really depends on what size is the home aquaria, is in the budget of the aquarist.

After all there are a few people on MFK that have large custom built tanks - up to 50,000 gallons in their homes. And at 50,000 gallons - a private aquarist could think about keeping sharks such as Nurse Sharks or Blacktip Reef Sharks, which the private aquarist with a 500 gallon - could only dream about.

But generally speaking the best types of sharks or rays for a private aquarist to consider keeping - is the small(2-4') benthic (bottom dwelling) species which are native to shallow coastal waters. For sharks this includes - Coral Catsharks, Bamboos, Epaulettes, Horn sharks & small species fo wobbegongs. For the rays - the round rays tend to be the best.
