Hi All,

hope this is in the right place.

We are thinking of buying and setting up a tank for a shark and stingray. Its been suggested we might start off with something small like a bamboo shark, and not to go any larger, unless we custom build a tank.

What exactly do we need? At the store they mentioned all kind of things, and not sure if they are all necessities, or just over accommodating to get us to spend more money.

Any suggestions will be great. Thanks,

list what they told you to buy

you need a 300 gal min tank if you get a baby shark 125 would work for a year or lesss

but if you want both i would say 300 minimum for a baby of both
you need a huge skimmer, soft sand, a good size sump

sharks are pooping machines

well if you dont know what you need, then i dont think sharks are the best fish to start out with. but yeah start with a 300+ gallon tank.

:iagree:
maybe a bit harsh but the truth.

It may be better to start slower than with a shark. Maybe try Discus first then try a ray then a shark...

in the past we have had ciclids, gouramis, oscars, discus, mollys, guppies etc.

Big Al's guys were telling us a 300 gallon tank (which we want), protein skimmer, calcium pump, algae thing, sump pump (that fits into a closet, which I thought was too big for 1 shark).

What do you think?

If you got the money give it a shot. Worst case scenario is you got a dead shark and a killer saltwater setup. I would not buy both the fish at once though. Try and stagger them a month apart at least. Also cycle it properly of course

We were thinking of doing the salt set up and then putting in a few smaller type fish and give it a month until we introduce the bamboo shark in it.

There ya go. Buy a nice test kit and make double sure its cycled. I might recommend an RO system since you would have so much invested in this already. But if you have excellent tap water its not that big of a deal. I would definitely recommend:) a UV sterilizer though. I got a coral life 18 watt its good. Its good insurance for expensive delicate fish.

thanks for the suggestions. We are most likely moving within a month or two, and start the set up around then.

We will also be looking into a 300 gal tank a long with real coral and some rocks that will be glued together so when the shark does go in there will be no injuries. We will be placing after a month of testing out the filtration system some tangs an eel, and few other smaller fish then after another mouth of having those fish add the bamboo shark for extra caution and then after bit of having the shark add the sting ray.
