So I got for free a few pieces of slate from a local nursery. I broke them with a hammer into pieces I could put in my tank. The stones basically broke into many layers with very sharp edges. I attached a picture. So, is it a bad idea to put these into the tank or is it okay?

Thanks!

20 gal long.
Don't have fish yet but my plan is

6-8 neon tetras
2-3 gouramis
2-3 loaches (not clowns, since they get too big)

you should be fine with the slate and those fish. i mean you tend to have to worry more with larger fish that are really skittish because when they get startled they just dart and could injure themselves. ive had slate in my tanks with no problems and i dont think you will have any. if your still worried. id say just take the edges of the slate and rub them on some rocks or something just to get of any really sharp edges

you can just take a file and soften the edges a little and there will be no worries.
