I know many people warn about using sharp rocks with fronts. i have a 150 with 7 fronts, 3 C. moorii and a few other tangs. all my fish are 2-3 inches. I used to use have a large pile of about 40 large lava rocks and never had a problem. i read on here that using sharp rocks can hurt my fronts. i took all of my lava rocks out about 3 monthes ago and i noticed my fronts don't seem as happy. before they used to explore and be more active but not they don't do much. my question is, i know that they CAN hurt themselves but what are the chances they WILL? i CAN be cruched by a falling airplane but the odds are i won't.

This is a picture of my 75 but i did the same thing in my 150 before i removed the rocks.

I have lava rock in my setups and the only time any damage occurs is when they all get to chasing eachother around and in the heat of the moment one aims himself right for a crack, crevice, or cave thats obviously a little too narrow for him, usually resulting in ripped fins.

I would upgrade to lace rock if I could but its a matter of $$ right now so Ill stick with lavarock,"the poormans lacerock" LOL

I use lace rock and have no problems, but I have tons of tuffa rock... it is cheap and great buffer... it is sharp and the only problem I have a peacock once in a while will eat way a new sharp spot and someone will get a little white cut... heals quick my fronts have no problems... and tuffa is cheap!!!!

it costs less and weights less too.

Thanks for all the tips on rocks,, that was going to be my next question..

I have noticed that my big bumblebee gets a little roughed up when chasing occurs with the lava rock.

I lost my bichir to sharp ridges inside a ship decoration.. it has an opening inside where fish can hide.. so he was in there and probably made a fast move and ripped his stomach.. i found him up inside the ship in the small areaso i know thats how it happened.. so sharp is sharp.. whether it is rocks or decor in the tank.. it may never happen to you but there is always that risk.
