Folks (Ok the 3 of you).. when you are at the Synposium.. ask a specific speaker the details of the Black Ray ban.
Patricia Charvet-Almeida..
I was really looking forward to meeting her. Her and her husband are the world's leading stingray biologists from Brazil. They have studied the elasmobranch all over South America, and primarily in the Xingu basin.
She writes all the field study white papers (pdf) and scientific research papers concerning Potamotrygon. These documents are probably one of the influencing factors in the ban on stingrays. One of her documents, I would suspect to be the catalyst, to having stingrays banned from export.. It basically stated that there is no solid information on the reproduction and conservation of Potamotrygon, and pushed for it to be halted until further studies can be done. (You can find most of these docs on google, I've read em all ).. Strange though, she also noted that fisherman and natives beyond the recent hydrodam built on the Tocantins, say that there is an abundance of Henlei rays, and they are breeding more prolifically due to the dam not allowing migration. The fisherman are annoyed because they are catching more and more black rays, and less wild food fish population. Interesting?
So those who will be at the Synposium.. this is the person who will have -%100 FACTUAL- answers on the export of Potamotrygon from Brazil. No Falsities, No Rumors, No Underlying Motives.. just straight facts.
So many things will unfold during and after the Synposium, but this is one person who will be able to set the record straight on the issue, and we won't have to see a stupid new black ray thread every month.
Ask her, Get the Facts, Report back to MFK headquarters.
Thanks Team!
