I just had my retic shed his first stinger. I was watching him like mad for the last week or so to see if I could grab it out. Then of course when i'm not looking it popped off. Now I can't find it anywhere in the tank. I have sand on the bottom of the tank. I moved the sand around to try and find it.
The question is: how concerned should I be about the ray's getting stuck with the shed stinger? Any tips on what to use to try and find it?

There is a fairly low probability the ray will impale itself before you find it.

I use the "magical cleaning rod" to find shed stingers in my tank. The comb looking attachment is great for it

well i always get mine as soon as poss because it might cause injury which could lead to an infected wound or cause the ray alot of discomfort & stress so better to be safe than sorry.

Yah deffinitly search for it but If you can't seem to find it for a few days I wouldn't have a nervous breakdown or anything.

It gets a lot easier to find them as they get bigger. My motoros last shed stinger was huge

In the process of watching my motoro now... has never shed before. Has 2 stingers of equal length now, I assume before too long it will shed? On topic though, I would be searching for mine non stop.. after seeing a few threads where rays have pierced themselves, I can't have that!

Rays seem to shed barbs every 3-6 months.

I got mine from the lfs I work at but the picture is from dr foster and smith web site you can order them from there they come in several different lengths

Sweet. Thanks. That tool looks awesome. I'll totally look for it. I do want to get it out asap, just so that there is no option of them getting hurt. I spend around half an hour moving sand last night looking for it, but couldn't find it. The stinger is off a retic, that is still really small, so it will be hard to find.
Thanks for all the replies.
