shelf in tank?

i know lots of reefers keep frag tanks with shelves, i want to put a shelf in my 55 when i set it up i want a place for some bottom dwellers to stay because i like bottom dwellers and a 55 is small. how would i make a shelf that sits at the half deep mark and is 2 feet long? how would i keep sand or gravel on it?

Buy an undergravel filter plate and turn it upside down.

Silicone a piece of glass the size you want in with 1/2" pvc pipe at each end to hold the sand in.

Bderick67 idea will give ventilation tho.

i am looking for a less permanent solution. i was thinking a piece of acrylic on four 6 inch pvc end caps with holes drilled in them so they double as caves.

just get a peace of a glass/plastic and build a frame out of pvc .

so it just sits like a table if you get what i mean
