Shelf Life? Please help me.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would guess you can tell by the smell? Frozen foods usually last quite a long time, but I don't know about in the refrigerator, sorry.

Hi does anyone know the shelf life of Bio-Spira? I know it's refridgerated but how long does it last in the fridge?

Sorry can't help more, but have you called Marineland direct so you have an absolute answer & not here say? Would hate to hear something bad happened cause of mis info. :( If it helps ML # 800-322-1266.
Since it's in what appears to be a non resealable pouch & not a bottle it would seem as though it's implied that it should all be used once it's opened, just a thought. Most that are to be stored in a fridge have a 1 yr. shelf life :)

Again, I'm sure this isn't helping, but can you take any of it bck so you don't have any on going concerns? BTW "Seachem" Stability is considered by many to be 1 of the best & I do know for sure that it's SL is 4 yr.'s & doesn't have to be refriged, which to me makes a very strong statement.

One more ? why are you having to use a product like this, I would just be using some substrate/gravel, bio, sponges, ect. from your exsisting tanks, as it appears you have plenty, to start the new tank? This method would surely be much better, safer & much less expensive than any other. :) :) :)

Well I am using cycled media in one of the tanks already but I want a super strong colony of bacteria super quick and also the factor I like to buy things lol. Also the big tanks and one 29 and the 55 are at my dads house except the 125 so there's not much media at my house in all the filtration for the 40 gallon and ten's. The 4-29 gallons aren't setup but they will be with all the Bio-Spira going in them and the new 125. The 125 isn't stocked as of now but my order from rapps is comming tomarrow after noon! I am SOOO happy! I got his new WILD JAG along with a Barred midas and the Zaliosus. All the 29's and the 125 are being done tomarrow completely set up. But the problem is I ordered to much Bio-Spira and I don't want to use all of the packages so all I am wondering is how long can it stay in the fridge unopened. See I ordered 270 gallons worth and I have 240 gallons to cycle so I don't want it to go to waste but I want to use it for something later on down the road (mini-cycles, etc.). I am going to take your word on the one year shelf life as you give people reliable info and you know your stuff.

Thank you for the compliment, we all do our best, it's nice to know we can help each other. :)

Just for the future, if you had a preexisting tank that was set up & had been running for more than 3 mnths, then you could collect & use 2-3 cups of gravel/substrate in your new tank, on the bttm of the tank, in the filter, ect. & w/ good strong flow in the tank (pwrhd type not, air pump type) then it would be considered seeded with in just a few hr.'s. I recently did this, along w/ seeding a new filter w/ bio foam & scrubbies from another existing tank/filter & my new 215 was cycled in 3 days or so. I've set up 100 gal.'s & less, 30+ times this way, w/ only a handful of gravel to seed & added fish within 3-4 hr.'s no prob.'s, no cycle. If your Dad lives close by (1/2-45 min.), then you can use some of his gravel/substrate, just keep submerged & your fine. This is what the LFS's everywhere do when setting up their tanks. Try it some time, you'll get to spend your $$ on :nilly: 's, instead of supplies  , LOL. :D

I spoke w/ Marineland today & they quoted me a time of 3 yr.'s if kept refrigerated, 1 yr. if opened & then refrigerated. If it's opened then if you can place it in a air tight container (I'm thinking large/storage size, dual zip lock bags), then that would be best they said. Hope all goes as you want, can't wait to see pic's. "Wild"JAG :headbang2 How big is it supposed to be? Sounds way cooooool. :) :) :)

they are date stamped i believe,,,,no exp date ?? from a blog....."Marineland does not indicate an expiration date, but they make the claim that Bio Spira is viable for 1 year if kept cold, and 6 months if kept at room temp.............."

i thought it needed to be kept cold ??????

it does. . . i wouldn't go by what the person's blog said. that doesn't make sense.

A "current" Marineland customer service product tech quoted exactly what I posted above, her name is Sharon, her tech # is 2213. Products change w/ time of course, but as of now that's how they regard this product. Sharon stated absolutely do not recommend storing it at room temp for any extended periods of time. Just in case there is further doubt the phone # posted wrk's & they return messages left after hr.'s, good company follow up. :)

Here say, is never good science, lol. :) :) :)
