For those of you who stack shells up in your tanks (or just cover the bottom of the tank), how do you get the detritus out of there without removing the shells?

Steve

Thanks for the response, Mike.

I am in the process of adding shells to my 180, and having been in this hobby for many years my first thought when adding anything to the tank is how will I clean it. It seems to me that the type of shells (as well as numbers) we use for shelldwelers have got to be very efficient at trapping detritus I/S them. This being the case, how does one go about cleaning the I/S of the shell?

Has anyone experienced their water quality going down hill due to this build up? We know that tanks can suffer greatly from detritus trapped in the substate and rocks as well as dirty filters, then how do we keep the shells from accumulating detritus just like these other things?

all the shells i have in my tank have been covered up with sand by the fish. i got tired of digging them up weekly. my brevis and caudopunctatus hang out with the other fish now.

In my shellie tank I pick up the shells and get the dirt out as I clean with the hose. I push them around with the hose as well. I have a 20 long for the shellies that are not in the 120 and I have about 60 shells in the 20... I can clean pretty well in a few minutes with the bump and dump as I call it...
