Anyone have success putting these together? I don’t have the tank yet, but am exploring my options. Thanks.

The Synodontis will harass the shellies by poking into their shells trying to eat fry or even eggs so if you are looking for breeding results with shellies, avoid them.

What size tank are you considering as well as which shelly species?

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of adding the cats not only for more variety to the tank, but for population control of the fry. My concern was more for the cats getting bullied by the shellies.

As for tank size, I was thinking a 20L would be good for the shellies, but perhaps too small to add a few cats as well. If so, perhaps a 30 gallon, or 40 breeder. Thoughts?

I like the lamprologus occelatus.

The shellies will go after the cats if they get too near their shells and while shellies do have teeth, the cats don't usually suffer bites being so quick.

I tried S. lucipinnis with Multies and the Multies were not having any of it with the cats in the same tank so I just moved the cats to another tank.

Occelatus are in my opinion usually more aggressive than other shellies and didn't tolerate anything in their tank that moves including my hand when scraping algae on the glass!! An upper water swimmer may work since they don't really interfere with the occies territory.

A 20 long or a 40B are nice sizes for shellies, I've not kept 30G tanks so not familiar with the dimensions. I keep most of my shellies as single species per tank so hopefully someone else can offer suggestions based on their experiences.

Thanks for the advice Deeda. Seems I’ll just have to decide if I like shellies enough to have a shellie only tank, or go with something else that will allow a little more variety. I’m just trying to get back into the hobby (still working on my wife), so I’ll just have one tank. Therefore, I won’t be able to experiment and move someone if things don’t work out.
