You have a beautiful female that is trying to reproduce. Listen man, there are so many ways you can present this to her to allow you try breeding.
1st: She is laying eggs, do you really want to try and stop any female from having the joy of raising offspring???
2nd: Put in a clear divider with a clay pot base between them for them to see each other with out touching or fighting. That way if she lays eggs you can slide them under the divider for them to be fertilized by the male.
3rd: This approach is the harshest and might lead to major relationship issues but it needs to be said: Does you having one more fish have any major negative impact on her life??? Does purchasing one more fish somehow put her in financial hardship??? If her answers to these questions are "No" then what is the problem??
If you are the primary money earner for your family then honestly, it should be your call. If you can evaluate the future costs of raising offspring and it is affordable to you then do it!!!!!!!!!

LOL my wife would have me sleeping in my Study if I got another fish. In all honesty, it has nothing to do with money. We are very fortunate and each have cushy jobs with the Federal and State governments, so money isn't an issue. She'll eventually allow me to get a bigger tank in the future, once we buy our new home in Rehoboth Beach, DE in a few years and a new fish if anything was to happen to this one. She has no qualms with my custom PC building spending habits or buying Gibson guitars, mixers and midi equipment for my home recording studio, for example. It's just that she doesn't want the fish to stress, which might lead to possible deaths, due to aggression. She knows how cichlids can be, and I understand where she's coming from. Oh the divider idea was shot down in flames instantly when I mentioned it to her a couple weeks ago. I tried. We used to divide fish in the past, and all they would do is sulk all day and night just sitting there staring longingly into each other's eyes through the plexiglass. It was crazy. My wife means well; she got me this girl as a Christmas gift this past December.

If you get an egg crate divider and cut holes in in so that only the female fish could get through you could still have two Cichlids interact and pair up without too much damage happening to either fish.
