NOT a first time dog.
They require a strong leader and are stubborn. They are independent for the most part, they ca be a bit shy, or even aggressive with strangers unless they've grown up with the right household.
They were bred for flushing game, and are highly trainable.
They are very tough, they could walk for hours in the snow and still be ready to go.

They do not do well if left alone for hours at a time, they need pack structure, and as intelligent as they are, they can wreck a house if they get bored.

Socialization if NEEDED as a puppy. If they are not socialized with cats, dogs, people and small children fro ma young age, it could cause problems.
They have a high prey drive, and can not be trusted around small birds, rats, ect. or their instincts may take over.

I have had bad experiences with a shiba X GSD mix who's in the wrong hands. He is a menace and ought to be put down or wear a muzzle everywhere, because his owner will not train him. Me, my family and our dog have paid for his negligence and lax in training. I watched this man and his dog yesterday, a friend of mine was walking with his rottie and basset mix, he also had his tiny ids with him, when they saw the man and his dog coming, they went off to the side(there was a seawall preventing them from moving more) the avoid him. But the man just allowed his dog to get close enough to them that I'm not sure if it did manage to bite his dogs.

They are strong-willed, stubborn, vivacious dogs, but make excellent pets in the right hands.

this is good reading for a potential shiba owner:

my sisters bf is a pro with dogs and we already have a wire haired pointing griffon but lol ha

theyve done their research i think theyll be fine

i really want to get one. bettagurl summed them up pretty well. they are very smart dogs and can be aggressive at times. i had a neighbor that had two that would destroy her place if she left them alone for too long. they would bark aggressively at people and dogs walking by if they were inside but if they were outside they were pretty nice.

this is Bailey and she was a terror. She has calmed down but she she is a sweat heart to everyone besides male dogs. She chewed everything in site for about 3 months and then got better.

I've been looking to get one of these dogs recently, need a pup with some smarts and some attitude. Everyone knows the ones with attitude are the best :)

seems like a bad idea.serious working dog with special needs.how about an American Bulldog Bully? They turn heads for sure and are very protective without getting too crazy, and very smart-03-2010 175.jpg

My g/f and my aunt each had one and as was said they weren't trained well and were barky and avoidant...only liked a couple people.

Great looking dog, good for you asking questions first, I should've done that way back when I had my dog.

they are gorgeous dogs.. wow
