Hi, been awhile since I posted but I figured I'd post this wherever I could.

I got 6 fish from a private breeder a few months ago. The box was 12" x 9" x 10" (L x W x H) and probably weighed around 1.5 pounds. I paid about $21-$24 for 2-day shipping.

I'm now trying to ship one betta to my friend who moved and left me in charge of her fish while she traveled and got settled in. The cheapest price I can find to ship her fish is $30 for a box about half the size and half the weight.

How do you ship fish affordably? Thanks

The thing is, stores, big online sellers, etc get onto a bulk rate since they ship so much so frequently. We won't get near the rate they offer them.
What you can do is see if a local fish store can ship it for you. I live near The Wet Spot, that has a large online presence. They were able to package and ship my fish. Only thing is they can't guarantee live arrival as it was my fish not there's so no replacements available if something should happen in route.

Oh, I'm well aware of that. But I didn't order thru a store. We communicated over email and I paid with a money order.
Also, my LFS never shipped fish even when they were open. They closed about 2 years ago. :(

You will not need much water , especially with a Betta, so the weight should be minimal. What you will need is space for oxygen.
I have used the USPS in the past, so if you choose say 24 hr, and they are late, later than the allowed time, you get re-embersed the shipping cost

Great advice. I suggest calling a UPS store in your area possibly cheaper shipping rates.
