I have a question to ask of anyone who has ever bought or sold fish over the internet.... i actually sold 5 pairs of hawaiian flame wrasse to a guy in NY (I live in Hawaii) for $90 a pair plus shipping and handling fees. I did this because he is a "retailer"/hobbyist and intended to resell them.... I told him in an email, prior to him paying, that he is responsible for up to 15% of the DOA's and that I would cover anything else after that. I also defined a DOA as a fish that arrives dead in bag and that he should photograph the DOA's and send me the pics if there were any. Out of 10 fish only 1--a female flame wrasse-- showed up dead after a 36 hour flight from Honolulu to NYC. The invoice value on the female was $25 so he had to absorb the loss. Then 5 hours later after acclimation 5 more fish died in his tank. He is now accusing me of improperly shipping and stating that that was the cause of the death of the fish-- "they could not properly acclimate because the heatpacks were wet and the water was 50degrees..." I, not being obligated to anything at this point, kindly offered to replace the lost fish at a fraction of what he paid ($55 per pair was my new offer) just to be kind. He flatly refused and cussed out me and the person who packed my fish. He has since started a dispute with Paypal. He also banned me from the reefer forum website that he owns/moderates.....What should I do? Is this my fault? And am I really obligated to do anything? Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say no. You clearly outlined what a DOA is. Your fish were healthy enough to make it to his door its his problem after that.

while i understand him being mad, as i would myself, the fish arrived alive. you gave a garentee for DOA--- DEAD on ARRIVAL, not for DAA--dead after acclimation.

how are you to know this guy acclimated them with a drip properly, and wasent in a rush to leave his house or dident give them a medicated dip that was too strong, or his tank param's were wacked. this is why its not profitable to deal with anything more than a dead on arrival issue. you have NO clue what a person does with those fish after their received alive.
