Hey Guys

I am looking into purchasing fish from another member one the site, and we have a good plan to pack the fish but have run into a road block on the shipping. Fedex is quoting us almost $800 to ship the box of fish.

What is the most cost effective way to ship Fish Overnight?

Just to add a bit more info to this in case it helps, it's for a pair of large festae. Male is in the 11-12" range and the female is somewhere in the 9" range. The styrofoam shipping box I got from my LFS is 21x15x15" and I'm estimating would be 30 to 35 lbs when filled with the 2 bags of fish and water.

If someone in the DC/MD/VA area has shipping experience and would like to help me out, I'd come to you and bring the pair and pay you for the trouble.

Honestly, unless you're a really experienced shipper, I wouldn't do it.

If you are must:
Triple bag the fish and put each in a regular fish box. Bags sloshing int each other in a big box is bad. I'd use much less water than you're using and that will cut down on the weight. Oxygen - and I hope you're using it and have purged the fish for a week or so - is more critical than water. A little more than covers the fish. Also add some polyfilter. Once it warms up a bit, you should be good without heat packs...but for now use them.

Another idea: Meet half way (NJ?) and the purchaser pays for gas and tolls. Bring the fish in covered buckets with polyfilter and battery air pumps. Of course, purge the fish well for the trip.

Good luck,
Matt

It’s Thai from CCA, I’ve shipped fish up to 16” before. Your best option will be same day airport to airport. Will run less than 80$ to NY message me if you need help

Beat me to it. Look into airport to airport or take a road trip.

If he was still in NY I would have met him halfway without any hesitation. He's way out west (1000+ miles away) now, so that's not possible. That's also probably not helping with shipping costs.

I'm probably close to 2 hours away from Dulles, BWI, and Reagan. Not really close enough to just drop by and ship out.

Airport to airport is going to be the most reasonable cost but sounds like a PITA for you.

Best case scenario it's going to be $250 - 300 to overnight two smaller, well-packed boxes with one fish each.

The goal is to reduce risk of death to as close to zero as possible. I've shipped plenty of fish and large ones are always at the risk of the purchaser. I'd much rather place them locally or semi-locally. Just too many things can go wrong, especially with really big ones for me to be comfortable. But lots of people are willing to roll the dice...

Personally when I had bigger fish shipped I always drove to Jeff rapps and he would ship for me since he's not that far. The buyer would cover shipping costs and a little extra for Jeff. Doa wasn't guaranteed by Jeff or by me. So it's on the buyer but I've never had an issue

If you have a reputable vendor whose kind enough to ship for you airport to airport like Jeff then that's you best bet.
