I am buying fishes long distance and want to know from people with experiences...What is the survival rate of Priority shipping and Express shipping? Most people only guarantee on Express, because its 1 day and 2 day depending on location. Help! Buyers and Vendors!
I'm buying from Illinois shipped to California

I have bought fish, inverts, and plants using priority and express/overnight mailing. In all cases everything survived except for one incident which was due to carriers neglect. What some carriers do is they will not leave the package or will decide to be a jerk and not show up at your door and hold the package all day on their truck and lie and say they showed up and you were not home.

This happened to me twice. One incident the fish died, it was the summer and the drive never came to my door, instead he decided to take the fish on a ride all day in his truck. I went to the post office at 5:30 to get the package and the fish was boiled. The other time the UPS driver never came to the door and lied so I had to go to their facility and pick it up, fish was ok though. The thing that pissed me off the most about it was it said LIVE FISH right on the package and the carrier did not care.

But back to shipping. Priority mail is usually fine for a lot of things. Overnight/express is only necessary for certain types of fish etc. Fish handle it pretty well and should arrive no problems. The only problem like I say, is mail carrier neglect, but it doesn't happen often. I have had stuff shipped to me, and I have shipped plants, fish, and inverts, and everything worked out right, except for those 2 incidents.

And the reason people don't guarantee on priority is cause it is not a guaranteed service. They say it is a 2-3 day service, but anything can happen. If there is a screw up with the shipping company and the package gets lost or delayed, and it CAN happen, there's nothing you can do. But for the most part it doesn't happen often. Express/overnight is guaranteed by shipping companies.

It is really your call. Most fish, inverts, and plants ship fine priority. But if these are rare and expensive, or just mean a lot to you, then the overnight/express would be a better choice if it makes you feel better.

BTW, I had a box if crayfish I sent to someone and there was a screw up with the USPS. They showed up in a week but all survived. What you have to remember is shipping anything, you are at the mercy of the carrier/shipping company. But like I say, the good thing is majority of packages show up in the right time estimates.

Thanks Starman, lol, I never thought I'd see that guy ever again, been about 25 years ago for me.

Thanks very much for your info and input, the guy shipping says he's been shipping and in hobby for 25 years so I think it should be okay. And maybe I'll call the USPS early so I can go fetch it myself too.

Ive ordered from texas with 100 percent survival rate. Thats gotta be a few thousand miles away from me

I bought 6x 6" silver aros from NYC to Las Vegas, NV over a year ago. Only 5 made it and they were in bad condition when i recieved them. The seller did not listen to me when i asked him not to feed them 24 hours prior to shipping, even though he claimed he did not. He also didnt add any bag buddies or other shipping additives.

I've had saltwater fish, inverts, and coral sent from Cali and Florida and never lost anything.

Yes, but was it Priority (2-3 days)
or Express (1 day)

mine was overnight. less than 24 hrs from bagging to un bagging

I had fish shipped to me within two days and the majority of the time, it went well. One time, one fish died thou because the shipper did not put enough water in it. They were all shipped within two days. One time, in the cold December month, I got a shipment and it went well. I would trust 2 days rather then 3 days. And the warmer months, I would trust it more. But in short, it is still a gamble thou if you want the cheaper 2-3 day shipping.
