Been without an aquarium for a year now. Longest span without one for me. Got this Craigslist 40g acrylic for $20. Going native with it. Kind of boring now. Any ideas for landscaping it? Small plant and driftwood with sand now. Just added a young 3" green sunfish. Im thinking thats the only fish I will be putting in this setup.

if you want to liven it up you could add a bigger piece of driftwood add some elodea on the other side and take out the green, theyre too onery to live in a 40g (I tried to have some in a 38g bowfront and they killed everything including each other) and put in some smaller sunnies like a mix of Bantam and Orangespotted or blackBanded and Bluespotted sunfish with some small madtoms for a community tank.

Rainbowrunner in the natives section of aquabid.com has amazing banded sunfish (not black banded), Orangespotted sunfish, and some madtoms. I'm pretty sure he has blue spotted too, but I'm not sure. I just recently got some of his eastern dollar sunfish and they are AMAZINGLY well colored even as juveniles. His banded sunfish that i bought are beautiful too. They would make an awesome fish for a well planted tank with their awesome sparkling look. I'm still waiting for my ospots he gave me to develop their colors. They're pretty small though.

Just remember that if you get the dollars, you couldn't get the others. The dollars are aggressive. Orangespotted sunfish are the most docile and smallest of the lepomis species and can easily be kept with the enneacathus species (ie. banded, bluespotted, black banded).

I would without a doubt get rid of the green sunfish and do a group of orange spotted sunfish and some enneacathus species. More fish, better colors, all around a better choice. Just so you know, zimmermansfish.com is supposed to have ospots and all the enneacathus species available sometime in September too. He's cheaper than Rainbowrunner, but idk anything about how good Brian's fish look.

Good luck, and definitely post pictures!

I will be looking for a larger piece of drift wood to will fit and still give my fish some swimming room. Im not sure about live plants doing well with the small LED fixture. Im in North Texas and not sure about some of the smaller sunfish being in my area. If I replace the green sunfish it will more than likely be with a longear. We have real nice longears in the creeks when they have water in them. Just need some good rain.
