firstly hi as this is my first thread. I have been asking this question recently through out various aquatic organisations. My question is this should aquatic outlets need further certification in order to sell potential big fish and problem fish? As a manager of such an outlet ( with a passion for large fish ) i am always bombarded with problems caused by other shops, some even in the group i work for. Couple of examples to prove my point, my nearest shop sells 1/8 of a box ( roughly 20 ) clown knives or royal knives a month ! the same shop also sells mbu puffers, giving customers the advice " they will only grow to 14" and "will be fine in a community tank so long as you keep it fed!" there is more but i wont waffle !!! i know that these people have only been keeping fish since they started there, around 6mths. and whilst they are nice guys know nothing. I would like to see all shops have at least one member of staff trained in larger or problem fish or just not be aloud to sell them. its not far on fish or tank mates .

I have ton agree with you i often go in to shops and the staff are giving poor advice and then when you tell them no an arowana Will get over 12" they totally disregard you and tell the customer your lying.

im working to take this as far as i can as im truely fed up with fixing other shops problems i love my fish to much and dont like to think of any living in poor cramped conditions !!!

that happenens to me all the time!!! :irked:

i completely agree, i work in a petstore and we sell oscars, tinfoils etc. Whilst we do our level best to ensure these fish go to the best homes possible, customers lie and this can leave you in a crappy position.
I would like to see stricter rules brought in to protect large fish, somewhat similar to the dangerous dogs act!!

Oscars are the worst in my store, and i now only stock them as ive been told i have to by higher beings !!! for every 1 we sell we seem to get 2 large ones back :( like you say if customers lie there is not much we can do ! people dont think of fish like they used to years ago people kept fish, now most people keep a TANK as it looks good in living room with little thought for fish :(

True, you can be fined for keeping dogs, cats, birds in poor conditions.
But keep a fish poorly, and nobody cares. I think it's because the age old idea that they are "just fish" and don't have the universal respect that furry pets have.

Theres a group of hobbiests looking to better inform the buying public about the fish they see in the petstore.Right now they are targeting the big box stores in the hopes of getting acccurate information on the fish stat cards on the display tanks
