just looks like it was in a small tank...not much "shorter", the deformed anal fin also makes me think small tank

now works. any side shots? not sure that he is a SB. def obese. majorly

the one in the op looks like looks like the one here. these are most likely asian captive bred sb floridas and the defect is more likely a result of inbreeding, compared to solomon's sb spotted gar(wc parents), which is likely the result of a genetic anomality. hence the deformed looking tail. however, i also remember very recently seeing a fl gar in a lfs with similiar injuries on the anal and cadual fins. leads me to suspect this may possibly be an old injury on top of being sb. obviously the fish is also a little overfed, which is what usually happens to sb fish to achieve the "fat & cute" result(that i personally find extremely distasteful). also the op has told me that prior to this the gar has was kept in an even larger tank(it's currently in a 180g i believe). furthermore, ime gars don't stunt in this way. in response to too small a tank, (and often as a result-) poor water conditions, gars reduce growth. obviously this has long standing effects on the fishes health and ultimately its lifespan, but i've not known a gar to become obease looking due to stunting.

ok, so it is possible and this was not in a small tank...what i don't get is what is the hype about sb fish, weather it be gar or aros or what ever...they seem atleast to me deformed and pointless...imo you can't beat a pure or hybrid regular bodied fish with perfict fins...ya you can keep them in smaller tanks cause they don't get as big, but it just goes back to the old saying if you can't house it don't keep it...

personal taste...you like beef others like chicken. it's not always about being able to house them in smaller facilities either. many people with sb fish have huge tanks more than enough for the regular thing.
