I thought I'd see them when I googled it, but no! With all the other SB cichlids, it's hard to believe there are no SB Dempseys. Anybody ever seen one?

a lfs had some juvinile jacks that were very close to a sb, all were about two inchs a peice but really they looked more like the had broken spines than anything.

Survival of only the fittest culls them in nature.
Because short body cichlids are deformities, and most legitimate breeders culled them in the past, its only been in the recent era of mutant love, that these deformities have been allowed to proliferate.
These deformities also usually make for unhealthy strains, so as spike38 stated, are normally self culled by their healthy brothers and sisters.

It's hard enough finding a decent straight backed specimen where I'm at. I suppose if one were to take the worst looking fry out of every batch of 3.00 PetSuppliedPlus/walmart atrocities you'd come up with a short lived cutie you can feel sorry for and deformed to your own specs. Re-sell the extra "short bodies", "Parrot mouths" and "bubble eyes" for 79.99. Good luck with your war against natural selection. I personally always thought Darwin looked kind of smug

Friedflowerhornfillet,
I like how you don't mince words.
and I also don't see the need to create mutant strains of cichlids, when there are already so many mutant goldfish that have been around for eons.
If you want a mutant, go buy a goldfish.

no. and i hope i never do.

i personally think its not necessary to have any mutant strain of any species of fish.
