So I'm visiting my parents in arlington this weekend, so naturally I had to check out a couple of fish shops. Saw 1 fish that caught my eye but wondering if anyone has experience with them. It was a short body jade goby. Or at least I think it was. It had the same girth as my other jade but was about half the length. Could it just be stunted or would this be a disirable trait? I couldn't find any pics of one online. He was 12 bucks which is about half the price I paid for my other one. Other then the length it looked very healthy , somewhat active and nice colors. Lemme know if I should get him or pass it up.
And he will be housed in an overfiltered and well stocked(lol) 130 for a while until I get the big boy tank next year.

I have a short body jade goby. He is growing now, so I don't know how big he will ultimately become. Easy to feed, in the wild their gut contents are usually hair algae and bugs. They aren't remotely picky though. I use different brands of algae wafers (Omega One, Hikari) and sinking pellets. He begs for food and wiggles like a fat man. Horribly cute, I'd say buy him for sure. In spite of their floor-dwelling appearance, they actually prefer to rest in floating plants or perch atop decor.

Sweet, I checked out your pics and definiley a cool lookin fish. I might just have to get it. How long have you had him and how big is he now? My normal one has put on about an inch a month. Is yours about the same? Just want to make sure he won't stay a run/shorty and get picked on by my other one.

Well, he was an LFS reject and came to me with exploding ulcers. I kept him in swinging salinity until the ulcerations cleared up, which took a few months. He didn't grow at all for a long time because of the stress of his illness so he's gotten the worse end of the stunting stick. I know the normal ones grow as fast as Oscars, but I couldn't even guess how fast a SB will grow, especially since mine is no indication of normalcy.

They don't really fight much unless breeding. The trio at my LFS got on pretty well, even with a mating pair claiming a corner. If you have enough hideys and room, I really can't see much potential for aggression. They are greedy, but not violent. You're more likely to have problems with cichlids scaring them.

Headed home in a couple hours and pretty sure i'm gonna go pick it up. anyone got any reasons why I shouldn't? are they harder to care for? anything about short bodies I should know before buying one?

As far as I know, we'll be the only two people around who have them. Oddball was breeding the standard jades so maybe he's seen a few SB in the offspring. You could PM him.

I'm on my way home with it now. I'll get some pics up when i get to the house.

Ok let me know if I was sadly mistaken or if he is a short body -

He's slightly larger in girth but about half the length of my nomal one who is about 3-4 months old.

I got it at 'The Fish Place", next to the ridgmar mall. It was 13 bucks so I couldn't pass him up.
