I read a couple threads on here and there was a bit of confusion on if this gene is dominant/recessive or what.

I have a shortbody flowerhorn male with a female V.Synspilum. I would assume from most opinions.....that I should get 50/50 body style if they spawn. Since Synspilum was involved with parrot hybrids, I figured it would be dominant in this pairing.

I also have a shortbody male flowerhorn with a Cryptoheros Sajica female. Would that also give me 50/50 offspring? Or since shortbody genes don't normally run thru Central american's, will it be normal offspring, but perhaps carrying that shortbody gene? THen if bred back to a shortbody FH, I would get my shortbody offspring.

Thanks for any/all responses.

After many shortbody breedings myself I still have a hard time determining percentage of sb fry. It does show up first generation so it is a dominant trait. Sb X sb (several generations of fixed sb genes) gets me near 100% sb.

I've bred syn x parrot which yielded maybe 75/15 (15% sb). Sb convict to parrot and that only had a few sb but there were not that many fry. Short body convict x regular convict which gave 100% regular. Finally sb convict x sb convict which gave 100% sb.

Clear as mud :)

Let me know how the FH x sajica spawn goes. I find sajica are not interested in hybridising unless it's with very closely related species. I have a nice chunky male with 2 female parrots but they show no signs of breeding.

~T~ will do. I got this Sajica small and they have grown up together. They dig and mess and I have actually seen them team up to move the rocks in the tank. She is probably ready, but he has yet to really make a move. They sleep in a pot on it's side and they do everything together, but so far, no breeding. He is just getting to the age that I would expect him to make an attempt.

My newer boy on the other hand (and younger, might I add) has a 6" Synspillum and a small Convict hybrid (3" Con x HRP)in with him and he is constantly cleaning pots and plates, and his tube has been down for days. lol

Both these boys look to be TX or Red TX crosses. And I keep reading how the males are sterile. A brother out of the older male's brood has produced fry. So I am hoping mine will. The other, I don't really know what he is crossed with or what his lines were like. He was given to me by a friend. I would love to get some nice SB to hang on to. Then I could criss-cross the fry back to the boys.

Now about your breedings.....which one was which?
I assume the syn x parrot was m syn x F parrot? I would guess SB due to Syn being in the parrot background

SB con x parrot = M con x F parrot? I would guess SB would be recessive here as SB is rare in Centrals

SB con x Reg con doesn't matter..... since SB is a rarity in them, I would figure they would be normal-but maybe carry SB gene

short to short (I was told on another forum) will always give SB of any species

Long story short (no pun intended) SB gene is a dominant recessive.
visual x visual = visual
visual x nothing= nothing nothing trumps visual
visual x carrier= percentage visual, percentage nothing----more nothing due to likelihood in the species

clearer mud or worse? lol

By the way....in a research thing I read on the Sajica a while back......
Females prefer and will always choose the largest male possible, HOWEVER, if males make the choice, he will choose the smallest female. I guess they have fragile ego's. LOL Maybe your parrots scare him. Since my female has never really known anything else, I hope they try at least. She hid from him for days and then all at once, she just came out and they did a little dance and they are now inseparable. So, my fingers are crossed.

You think a lot like me. Sb cichlids facinate me.

Yes my syn x parrot was male syn to female parrot. She was an odd looking one though. Bright yellow with loads of black/grey markings that never faded. She was big too and basically a KK.

The offspring were a mish mash. Some looking like regular syns, some like BP's with syn markings and the only one that faded eventually turned a deep orange. The closest I've seen to a home bred BP but not quite.

Here are a few pics of my fish (all deceased now sadly).

This is the sb one with syn markings that I kept. Suspected male and bred with the parrot in the picture (also a strange one, similar to my breeder female). They only bred once and may even have both been female. They always displayed to each other but just bred that once.

This was my fave, the only one that faded (and took a long time to) that I kept. She was a real beaut and I wish I had bred from her. Pics don't really do justice.

The Sb con was male and actually nipped and fertilised the eggs in while the male and female parrots were breeding.

That makes sense about the sajica. I've just been given a small female convict so maybe she'll float his boat. I've bred these before and the offspring are quite cool. Most convict hybrids look ugly.
