however it could be a tropical or cuban(highly unlikely) but hey
pictures would help thouhgh
:)

If one wanted to stretch it in common names there is a shortnose gator gar.. It is a Crocodile gar Atractosteus spatula X Lepisosteus platostomus hybrid.

This is not Likely the fish your being sold on though...
There are all sorts of misleading and messed up common names for these fish..Hell I've seen Florida gar labeled as "spotted Alligator garpike cichlids"..

Get a pic and post it..Most likely it will be an easy ID..

last week i was trying to explain to an lfs owner that the gar he was selling was a longnose gar and not a "flagtailed gar". he didnt get it. :nilly:

i left scratching my head...lol!

the flagtail part of the gar terminology is in reference to the caudal fin patterning...no idea why they actually use it though, as it's completely ridiculous...maybe we should start naming all hard-to-ID fishes after random objects that they bear a moderate resemblance to...like the paper-clip perch, and the toaster tetra??? annoying.

either way, these are usually longnose gars, and on stocklists (TFD is an example) it's often listed as "Florida flag-tail longnose gar" or "flag-tail longnose gar"...no idea who came up with the idea to use the name though--
