i have a 240 gallon tank 8'x2'x2' 1x 10 inch silver, 1x 9 inch florida gar, 1x 9 inch lima shovelnose catfish, 1x 5 inch flag tail, 1x 7-8 inch retro, 1x 5 inch senegal bichir, 1x 4 inch albino bichir. i was thinking about adding more tankmates and want to try a shortnose gar, i just want some opinions. the shortnose is going to be around 8 inches.

not with yr tankmates, in fact, u shouldn't be keeping any gars or bichirs with yr fllagtail...just a heads-up
 
no with ur tankmates, like xander said, and DEF not a shorty with those tank mates
 
ok well im gonna get rid of the flag one day when hes a little bigger, and im thinking about getting lowerjaw bichirs, would i be able to keep one then?
 
aros are also bad tankmates!! shortys are very sucidel. not ur beginner gar.
 
Are you sure its a shortnose gar? They aren't that common (in the aquarium trade). Where are you getting it from?
 
i think hes getting from TFD
 
Basically the same care as any gar. The only major difference is they are more skittish than most other species of gar, VERY easily spooked, which causes them do dart around the tank. That means they are more likely to injure themselves if there are loud noises, people near the tank, etc.

They will get acclimated to people around the tank, and be slightly less skittish, but my shortnose have been with me for about 9 months now, and they still get skittish sometimes.
 
alright thanks, my silver arowana is skittish master so im ok with getting another skittish fish. thanks alot conner. one more question should i do less water changes i do about 40% a week
